John Constable at the start of the game mode.

The Night Watch is an arcade game mode in We Happy Few, first introduced in Update 1.7.

In The Night Watch, the player plays as a Bobby named John Constable who is tasked with clearing the streets of Hamlyn Village from Wastrels, Plaguies, and other strangers from the Garden District.

Buff SluggerAgain Gameplay[]

The Night Watch is a round-based game mode revolving around combat. Every night (or round) the player will be tasked to eliminate any and all enemies present in the area. Every enemy defeated will yield a small monetary reward which the player can use to purchase equipment from Vending Machines that can be found on the streets.

In addition to clearing the streets of enemies, the player must also watch John Constable's Joy Meter, which will initially start off as full at the beginning of the round, but will steadily decrease when the night starts. Once it depleats, the player will go into Blackberry Joy Withdrawal and has a limited amount of time to locate a Mood Booth before John collapses, resulting in a Game Over.

The Joy Meter can be replenished by using a Mood Booth. Unlike the main game, however, Joy is no longer free and will instead cost a certain amount of Sovereigns. It initially costs £20 per Joy pill, but it will increase by £10 every subsequent night.

All rounds last for 2 minutes and 30 seconds before the player can end the round. When the morning comes, all Mood Booths and Vending Machines will close. In order to actually end the night, the player must interact with a Bobby Popper, which will instantly heal the player from all ailments they got, and replenish their Joy Meter to full.

In addition to John Constable, there's also Spankers around town for the player to use to their advantage. Spankers will zap all nearby Downers and Wastrels, making it somewhat easier for the player to handle the hordes of enemies.

It's important to note that enemies that have not been killed by the player, they won't grant the player any sovereigns or keys.

Enemies[]

In order to acquire more money to buy Joy and equipment, the player must hunt down and eliminate any and all nearby enemies present. These consist of the following:

  • Wastrels: The outcasts of society, the inhabitants of the Garden District and the most common enemy in the game mode. They are not very tough, are never armed and won't inflict very much damage. They can be somewhat dangerous in large groups, but they're mostly harmless. They yield £5 when defeated.
  • Headboys/Plough Boys: A subvariant of the Wastrels. Headboys first appear during Night 3, they're the same as the Wastrels, except they're slightly tougher, and will throw Spiky Bricks or Rocks as a ranged attack. Plough Boys appear during Night 6, and disappear on subsequent nights. They yield £10 when defeated.
  • Plague Wastrels: Wastrels infected with the Plague; they are first introduced during Night 5. They have no ranged attack, though they're slightly tougher than ordinary Wastrels, and can infect the player with the Plague. Plague Wastrels are hostile towards everyone and will attack any nearby non-plaguie, harming and killing them without player intervention. They yield £12 when defeated.
  • Plague Soldiers: Home Army Soldiers infected with the Plague; they are introduced during Night 10 and replaces all Plague Wastrels during subsequent nights. Plague Soldiers are identical to Plague Wastrels, but tougher. They yield £17 when defeated.
  • Witches: A rare enemy that serves as a miniboss, they first come out during Night 2. Witches have no melee attack but will instead charge up a purple-colored energy ball and launch it towards the player, inflicting a lot of damage and sometimes causing bleeding. Witches have very high health and can take several hits from strong weapons before going down. Witches yield £25 and drop Witch Keys when defeated, the keys can be used to open the Witches' Sacrificial Chests, which each contain a gemstone worth £75.

All enemies will be spawned randomly throughout the play area, sometimes alone, sometimes in large groups.

ShopIcon Equipment[]

When the player first enters a match, they will spawn in with the following:

Additional gear is available for purchase at Vending Machines found scattered throughout the play area, for a price. These Vending Machines contain both weapons, healing items and a limited set of outfits with the following unit prices;

Buff TippyToes John Constable[]

The Bobby2

John Constable

In The Night Watch, the player takes control of a Bobby named John Constable. Appearance-wise, John Constable is an ordinary Blue Bobby.

Compared to the other playable characters, John Constable possesses incredibly high health, has higher than average stamina and faster stamina regeneration and he is as fast as Arthur in terms of movement speed while dealing as much damage as Ollie. He also does not possess a weight limit to his inventory, meaning he cannot become overburdened.

John Constable does not have a skill tree like the other playable characters but he does have a special ability in the form of Rage Mode. In order to activate Rage Mode, the player has to defeat enough enemies to fill up John's Rage meter. Once it's filled up, the player can activate Rage Mode, which will grant unlimited stamina, greatly increase his movement speed, moderately increase melee weapon speed and slightly increase attack damage until the meter is empty. The Rage Meter cannot be filled if the player is going into/already suffering from Blackberry Joy withdrawal, any progress already present of the Rage Meter will disappear.

Buff WaitForIt Tips/Strategies[]

  • Joy comes first! The player should be aware of how much Joy will cost before buying something too expensive.
  • The player will be fully healed and full on Joy at the start of every night, only heal when absolutely necessary.
  • The Bobby Helmet is crucial for survival as the light from the helmet will help stun the plague wastrels/soldiers.
  • Extra Strength Sanitol and New Formula Dexipam are only sold once and is never restocked, it's highly advised to get these as they max out the player's health and stamina.
  • The player can survive by only taking 1 pill per night. The player is able to take Joy whilst in combat, and they need to be aware of where blackberry booths are for easy access whenever they enter the withdrawal stage.

Buff Conformist Trivia[]

  • Although not specified, this is likely a modified "Wellie Mode" as promised from the Kickstarter page.
    • The "Wellie Mode" stretch goal was never reached.
  • Although it's never mentioned when The Night Watch takes place, it's possible it takes place some time between Act II and We All Fall Down.
    • However, with the absence of Sally Boyle, it's unknown how the constables can have enough Blackberry Joy for multiple days.
