Should Auld Acquaintance is a quest in We Happy Few. This quest becomes available after Arthur enters Hamlyn Village.

Objectives

In-Game Description

I need to get a Letter of Transit to get back into the Parade. But I'm an Enemy of the People, so I doubt anyone's going to give me one because I asked nicely. Maybe I can steal or forge one in the old Government Printing Office.

The front is all boarded up. How about the back?

Really no point arguing with these chaps.

Walkthrough

After Arthur is welcomed back into civilization, he remembers that his Letter of Transit is inside of his office in the parade, preventing him from entering the Parade in the first place. Though he comes up with the idea of breaking into the abandoned Government Printing Office to forge or steal one from there, though uppon arrival, the place is boarded up.

As he enters through the big red door, a cutscene will play out where he meets his childhood friend Sally Boyle. There they are at first happy to see each other again after so many years had passed, though the conversation quickly becomes sour as Sally mentions she's close with the General and suggests that she could get a Letter of Transit from him, which Arthur denies at first, though he quickly apologizes before realizing she had disappeared when he did so.

Not too long after this, Arthur is ambushed by three Plough Boys. He can either escape from them or kill them all, once leaving the backalley, a Bobby stops Arthur, questioning him about the ruckus that just took place.

Sally: "You know what? Never mind. Next week?"

Sally: "Arthur? Arthur Hastings?"

Arthur: "Lovely day for it."

Sally: "Don't you "lovely day for it" me, you idiot. It's me! .. Sally!"

Sally: "I knew it was you! I mean, the glasses, the hair, the really adorable jacket, don't ask me how, you're not that awkward little boy any more, are you? But the way you walk, it's like the mask isn't even there, I just knew, there's Arthur!"

Arthur: "Sally? You look--fantastic."

Sally: "This ancient thing? I've had it two weeks, I'm out of my mind with boredom."

Arthur: "Green and white checkered. Your dress. The last time I saw you, running out the door."

Sally: "That horrible gingham dress? Oh God. That takes you back."

Sally: "You're off your Joy!"

Arthur: "Don't be ridiculous."

Sally: "Oh ye of little fucking faith. I'm not going to turn you in. Whatever possessed you to go off your Joy...?"

Arthur: "Percy. I saw a picture of him."

Sally: "-Oh, God."

Arthur: "I promised I'd look after him in Germany...I have to go find him."

Sally: "How are you going to get out? Do you even have a Letter of Transit?"

Arthur: "Absolutely. On my desk. In the City."

Sally: "Good Christ! Just tell the policemen that, I'm sure they'll wave you right on through!"

Arthur: "Haven't figured out that bit yet."

Sally: "... I'm very close with General Byng."

Arthur: "Of course you are."

Sally: "No-"

Arthur: "You always did have a knack for making helpful new friends."

Sally: "I mean, I could go see him, and ask him to give you a Letter of Transit-"

Arthur: "Don't put the General out on my account. I'm sure you've only so many favours you can ask him."

Sally: "My God, you still hate me, don't you?"

Arthur: "Yeah, well, I've only been wondering for the past fourteen years--"

Sally: "We were sisxteen!"

Arthur: "--How could you?"

Sally: "Because I liked him? Because he had that adorable beard? I don't know. There isn't a reason for everything--"

Sally: "You're the last bloody person who should be off his Joy."

Arthur: "I can't believe you are."

Sally: "Believe me, I take enough ... stuff."

Sally: "Look. Some Downer broke into my lab last week -- literally tore the bars off the windows, and the ridiculous thing is, I forgot to lock my front door --"

Sally: "Point is, it's a horrible, terrible world out there, and I just don't see you smashing your way into the City without a great deal of help--"

Arthur: "Oh, no. Not me."

Sally: "I'm living on the King's Road right now..."

Arthur: "-Of course you are."

Sally: "I couldn't exactly have stayed there. Could I? Like nothing happened?"

Arthur: "Look, I'm sorry. This isn't what I meant to-- Maybe we could help each other. Maybe I could come by when I'm feeling-"

Arthur: "... better--? ... Brilliant."

Arthur: "You arse. How about going to King's Road, knocking on her door and apologizing grievously?"

Arthur: "And asking nicely for a Letter of Transit. You idiot! She knows General Byng!"

Trivia

  • The name of the quest likely comes from 'Auld Lang Syne', a Scots-language poem by Robert Burns. However, some of the lyrics have been derived from the ballad "Old Song Syne" by James Watson.
    • "Should Old Acquaintance be forgot, and never thought upon; The flames of Love extinguished, and fully past and gone: Is thy sweet Heart now grown so cold, that loving Breast of thine; That thou canst never once reflect." - "Old Song Syne"
