Watson

Watson meeting Roger Bacon.

Robots were introduced in the They Came From Below DLC. Acting as the main enemies, their parts have been used to create the various futuristic devices throughout Wellington Wells.

History[]

Created by an extinct alien race long ago as servants, the robots eventually learned how to feel and created their own society after their creators died under unspecified circumstances.

On August 12, 1959, Helen Faraday opens up a portal to their dimension and captures one of the robots, breaking it apart to learn more about it. This is where she discovers that they are powered by Motilene, and figures that it would be a far better form of power than wood gas that they've been using earlier. She then plans to trap another robot and teach it English.

On March 2, 1962 Helen Faraday invents various devices as requested by the Executive Committee, including Jubilators, Peepers, and Compliment Machines. These devices were created from the parts of dead robots.

She'd stop creating any more of these devices some time between 1962 and 1964.

Events of They Came From Below DLC[]

Dr. Faraday gets the idea to turn the robots into agricultural farming tools in response to the ever growing food shortage in Wellington Wells. When Roger discovers these devices, he sees one of the robots taking off the head from the hellish device, repeating the word "Sorrow". Realizing that the robots can think and feel.

Roger finds a dismantled robot on a medical bench. He activates the robot and reassures it that he disagrees with Faraday's actions, the robot in turn responds with "I thought humans did not have the capacity for empathy". Roger then learns of the Positronic Converter that is used to hijack their feedback loops and make them love their enslavement.

In the end, Watson, the robot Helen taught English, takes her for "reprogramming". Saving their race from further enslavement.

After Helen Faraday's "reprogramming", she's returned to Wellington Wells and refuses to create any more devices for the Executive Committee. However, she eventually manages to create another portal, though she instead uses it to get out of Wellington Wells.

Variations[]

There are four types of robots encountered in the game. All variants can come in either copper or metal, though they all function the same regardless of material.

TinyRobot

Small Robot.

Regular[]

There are two types of regular robots, ones with an electric charger, and ones without an electric charger.

Robots without an electric charger on their heads are the most common of the robots, their form of attack is to throw punches and whack the player using their hands.

Robots with an electric charger will not attack the player physically, but will instead summon an electric circle around where the player is, if the player stays in the circle for over 5 seconds, they'll get stunned and remain vulnerable for any incoming attacks for a short bit.

Their attacks can be canceled by either shooting or swinging the Ray Mace at them.

Small[]

These robots are introduced at the second part of the game, in which hoards of robots have suddenly broke loose and is killing everyone in Inis Holm. They are half the height of regular robots, and their arms seem to be stuck in the air.

BossRobot

Boss Robot.

While they only have one form of attack, whacking the player, they are significantly faster than the other robots. They're also able to duck to the side in order to avoid getting hit.

Boss[]

Only three of these robots are encountered in the DLC, they are huge and extremely strong, but also very slow at times. Their only form of attack is to punch the player.

Trivia[]

  • Watson, the robot that Helen Faraday taught English, has an electric charger on its head.
  • A blueprint for the robots can be found in the room holding the dismantled robot, the pose mimics that of Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.
  • The robots quote the word "Exterminate", a famous line reference to fictional extraterrestrial mutant race the Daleks from Doctor Who (1963).
  • The alien symbols that the player finds throughout the facility are Hobo Signs, symbols that began in the 1880's up until World War II. They were used by homeless people to aid them, as well as others, either find help or steer clear of trouble.
    • One of the symbols that are frequently seen throughout the facility are not part of the Hobo Signs, but is a unique symbol that represents the portal they've been lead through. The same portal is seen at the very end of the game.
      • It's also noted that this unique symbol is crated every time a portal disappears, the most evident example of this is when Faraday gets sucked into the ground at the very beginning of the game, leaving behind one of those marks on the floor.
