Constable Wright is a Bobby encountered in Act I of We Happy Few. He guards Salamanca Bridge in Eel Pie Holm.
Events of Act I[]
Constable Wright prevents Wastrels from reintegrating themselves back into Hamlyn Village, as he believes it's best for everybody, on either side, if the bridge remains broken. Arthur, using the Curious Device received from Ollie Starkey, poses as an undercover bridge investigator working for Central, and threatens to report the Constable as the reason for the bridge being broken. Constable Wright, fearing for his job, allows Arthur to pass through.
Transcript[]
Without the Curious Device[]
Wright: Looking to return to the Village, are you, sir?
Arthur: That's right. I realize it was a mistake not to take my Joy, and I'd like to rejoin civilization.
Wright: Well, sir, you have come to the apposite place, but I am afraid it is not the apposite time. The door goes in and out of operation, and at the moment, it is out.
Arthur: Should I wait?
Wright: Not unless you're getting paid by the week like I do, sir! Haw!
Wright: Honestly, sir, it was open for a bit just a little while ago, but before that, well, it might have been days it was closed. Mechanical things ain't holding up like they used to.
With the Curious Device[]
Wright: Lovely day for it. Unfortunately the bridge is not open at this time. It was working just a minute ago, but the door is broken again, you'll have to wait till it's up again.
Arthur: Do you even let anybody in?
Wright: Oh, yes, there's someone in there now.
Arthur: And in the past month?
Wright: Well, in the past month ... ah ... There's a chap in there right now.
Arthur: You don't really want anyone back form the Garden District, do you?
Wright: Well, my wastrel friend... no one goes off their Joy can actually take Joy. I mean, would you? Everybody feels better if that door stays broken. You, us, everybody.
Arthur: Well, Constable Wright. I suppose now I can tell Central why the bridge keeps breaking down.
Wright: Central?
Arthur: Ever seen one of these?
Wright: Oh bugger me. You're not -- some sort of undercover bridge inspector?
Arthur: This device detects structural irregularities using shortwave radar. But I don't think it will show me the real problem. Will it, Constable Wright?
Wright: Look, sir, you can fix that door. But them Wastrels still ain't going to take their Joy. It makes them see eyes everywhere.
Arthur: That's not for you to decide, is it?
Wright: No, Sir... The maintenance hatch is that way, sir.
Wright: I'd ... be grateful if you forgot this conversation ever ever happened.
Arthur: Maybe I will. Maybe I won't.
At Night[]
Arthur: How do you go home at night?
Wright: Oh, well, me, I just use the maintenance hatch?
Arthur: Can I use the maintenance hatch?
Wright: Haw. That's only for bridge workers and bobbies! I'm afraid you'll have to wait for the regular door.
Arthur: Lovely.
